Atlantic Theater Company opens its season with Tom Donaghy's drama, starring Mary Steenburgen. The Beginning of August is the story of Jackie, a man whose wife, Pam, has abruptly and mysteriously left him and their infant daughter. Confounded by Pam's unexplained absence and unable to pay for daycare, Jackie hires his stepmother, Joyce, to babsit until his wife returns. The involvement of a lonely neighbor, and a housepainter who finds countless excuses not to finish the job, compound a drama of crossed boundaries amidst increasingly complex family dynamics--until Pam returns to ask for forgiveness and establish a new order.
