WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

From Britain's fastest-rising young playwright comes this shattering and darkly funny new drama about a family at the breaking point. Mia and Henry have long been dealing with their mother's addictions, but after a prank goes wrong at Mia's boarding school, their situation goes from comically bad to utterly ridiculous. When their estranged father arrives to sort things out, they must face the reality that their well-to-do family may have combusted beyond repair. Following critically acclaimed sold-out runs at The Royal Court Theatre and in London's West End, this award-winning first work by Polly Stenham makes its much-anticipated New York debut next spring.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

In order to fully understand the appeal of
That Face, which is now being seen at the Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage I after an award-winning run in London, it helps to know that the playwright, Polly Stenham, was only 19 years old when she wrote this sensational (in all senses of the word) work about the ultimate dysfunctional family. Don't let anyone tell you this is a black comedy, though; That Face is an artful attempt to give meaning to misery.

Moreover, one can't help but sense that there is something autobiographical about the story presented on stage; the characters are so sharply defined that they seem etched in reality. The mother, Martha (Laila Robins), walks a tightrope betwee[...]

RE:That Face review
Move over Lucy Prebble, Polly Stenham is here. The British invasion continues. This young playwright wrote her first Play ?That Face?, at age 19, awarded as 2007 Best Play by Evening Standard Awards and TMA Awards. She was also awarded as the 2008 Most Promising Playwright by the Critics? Circle. Packed with great talents, this present Play takes place in London, having an alcoholic and a drug addict mother Martha Laila Robins, caused by the abandonment by her husband Hugh Victor Slezak for another woman, as the protagonist of this darkly, comedic drama; and her relationship with her children, mainly with her very supportive and loving son Henry Christopher Abbott, and her father-idolizing daughter Alice Ma?t? Alina. Supported by Alice?s high school friend Cristin Milioti and no-speaking role of Izzy Betty Gilpin. Will this family survive the demons of alcohol and drugs caused by a broken marriage? How much more will you give? Caring is not enough. Or is it. This Play will make you cringe and occasionally push you to the edge. The presence of special effect on Henry will leave you wondering ?How?d do that?? David Zinn?s clever 5-Scenic Designs School, Martha?s Bedroom, Father?s flat, Hospital and the bar and his costumes, too, are a marvel. You will like Matt?s Tierney poignant Sound Design. Spot on fight directions by J. David Brimmer. Ben Furey Dialect Coach did an exemplary job. The English accents are flawless. Congratulations, director Sarah Benson. Executive Producer Barry Grove Manhattan Theatre Club, Inc. will have no problem tapping into big time Broadway producers. ?That Face? will be a big hit on Broadway. Hopefully next season.
