WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Irish Repertory Theatre Company presents Take Me Along, with music and lyrics by Bob Merrill, book by Joseph Stein and Robert Russell, based on the Play Ah, Wilderness by Eugene O'Neill. Charlotte Moore directs, with music direction by Mark Hartman.
Take Me Along takes place in Centerville, Connecticut in a happy time. It's the Fourth of July and the flags are flying! Sid Davis, the profligate brother returns from Waterbury hiding a secret which will affect the whole Miller family. Richard, the 17-year-old self-named romantic poetry devotee pledges his troth to Muriel, his 16-year-old swain with the cry, "Live, Muriel, Live!!!" That's before he is caught proposing not only marriage, but suggestions of a more immediate intimacy.

Call me old-fashioned or tell me I'm refusing to acknowledge that the traditional mid-20th-century musical no longer has valid appeal in today's fast-moving, culturally fragmented world. I couldn't care less. The Irish Repertory Theatre's revival of the Robert Merrill-Joseph Stein-Robert Russell 1959 tuner
Take Me Along -- based on Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness! and now best remembered as a vehicle for Jackie Gleason -- is as entertaining and lighthearted as any show should hope to be. Furthermore, I'll put up a spirited fight against anyone who tries to convince me I'm just a pushover for the portrait presented of an innocent small-town American past that may never have existed.
