WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Atlantic Theater Company in association with Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman, presents the world premiere production of the new musical Spring Awakening, featuring music by Grammy Award nominee Duncan Sheik ("Barely Breathing"), book and lyrics by Steven Sater (Carbondale Dreams), choreography by Bill T. Jones (The Seven) and direction by Tony Award nominee Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie).

Based on Frank Wedekind's masterpiece The Awakening of Spring, Spring Awakening is the contemporary musical adaptation of one of literature's most controversial plays. Spring Awakening boldly depicts a dozen young people and how they make their way through the thrilling, complicated, confusing, and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's score feature songs that illuminate the urgency of adolescent self-discovery, the burning intensity of teen friendships and the innate suspicion of the uncomprehending adult world. The story centers around a brilliant young student named Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz, and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of womanhood.

AT EVERY PERFORMANCE, THERE WILL BE TWENTY ONE $10. SEATS LOCATED ON STAGE MINGLED IN AMONG THE ACTORS. Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling 646-216-1119 or may be purchased at the box office (336 West 20th Street) two hours prior to curtain.

The Atlantic's critically acclaimed production is set to move to Broadway in the 2006-2007 season.

Whether Steven Sater and Duncan Shiek's decidedly 21st-century musical version, also titled Spring Awakening, will still be produced 100 years hence remains to be seen. But there's no doubt this piece will speak to many young theatergoers -- and thrill those who are willing to meet this unusual and frequently brilliant[...]
