WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Israel's Gesher Theatre, one of the world's only bi-lingual theater companies, returns to the Lincoln Center Festival. Shosha, based on work by Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer, who died in 1991, was adapted for the stage by Yevgeny Arye, Artistic Director of the Gesher.

The stories that make up Shosha were first published in 1974 in New York's Daily Forward. The play is the story of a young Yiddish poet living in the vibrant but threatened city of Warsaw during Hitler's rise to power in the 1930's. He is surrounded by colorful sea of characters, including bohemians and writers, philosophers and actors, Communist revolutionists, Jews and gentiles, and, above all, five women - an American actress, a Polish maid, his patroness, a Communist ideologist, and Shosha, his childhood sweetheart - with whom he carries on simultaneous affairs.
