Since we live at a time when people can't get enough of gossip trumpeted loudly from newspapers, television, and the Internet, the destruction caused by tongue-wagging neighbors isn't uppermost in our thoughts. It was, however, on Benjamin Britten's mind in 1945 when -- with the help of librettist Montagu Slater -- he turned a segment of George Crabbe's 18th-century poem The Borough into the opera Peter Grimes.
