WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
People Are Living There is a warm, wise, funny yet touching and passionate play by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard. Millie, a feisty landlady of a sleazy boarding house, is celebrating her 50th birthday. She is looking forward to a nice romantic evening at home until she finds out her lover has run off with a younger woman and she's now stuck at home with her three downbeat lodgers. Even if it kills her, she is determined to celebrate and to have her revenge as she persuades her guests to join her for a Pinteresque birthday party none of them will ever forget! Suzanne Shepherd directs.

An Athol Fugard play set in New Jersey? As unlikely as that seems, A Specific Theatre Company is presenting the playwright's 1969 work People Are Living There in an adaptation that transposes the action from Johannesburg, South Africa to Elizabeth, NJ. The production is adapted and directed by Suzanne Shepherd, who has known Fugard for 30 years, and her revised script was approved by the playwright sight unseen -- but maybe he should have taken a look at it. While I'm unfamiliar with the original version of the play, this new incarnation is a tedious piece that drags on and on despite a couple of interesting moments.
