WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

British playwright Jez Butterworth (Mojo, The Night Heron) takes on domestic paranoia in his inimitably sly and incisive style in Parlour Song, which explores what happens when two ordinary people discover they hate who they have become. In his first American world premiere production, Butterworth reveals a fascinating world where all is not what it seems, when a demolitions expert suspects his wife is stealing from him.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

In the program for Jez Butterworth's Parlour Song, now being presented by the Atlantic Theater Company in Neil Pepe's sleek production, I immediately noticed the phrase, "England, in the late Summer, Autumn/In and around the small suburban new-built home of Ned and Joy," above a cast list indicating that in addition to Ned (Chris Bauer) and Joy (Emily Mortimer), there's only one other character, Dale (Jonathan Cake).

Then I took note of Robert Brill's triangular sofa, dining-table, queen-sized bed set. So it didn't take much foresight to realize the work would likely be about a relationship triangle in which a husband and wife in marital conflict are visited by a man who causes further rup[...]
