WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Seventy-one years ago, Thornton Wilder made theatrical history by insisting that his new play Our Town be presented on an unadorned stage and with few props of the basic wooden table, chair and kitchen utensils variety. He didn't go so far as to request that the three-act play devoted to presenting turn-of-the-20th-century Americana as universal human experience be performed with the audience sitting on three sides of it, and therefore be more or less in it, but that's exactly what director David Cromer has done quite beautifully in his production of Our Town now at the Barrow Street Theatre.

In fact, Cromer has accomplished so much on a floor-level playing area with Wilder's poeticall[...]

Our Town
This play was seen on 7/27/10 in the Barrow Street Theater West Village NYC: Not having known anything about Thornton Wilder?s play prior to attending, but having heard the play referenced, on numerous occasions, my curiosity was peeked. After reading the description of the play online, I decided to purchase tickets and see what the play, and David Cromer?s adaptation was all about. The set was ultra-minimalist, being comprised of just 2 tables in the center of the stage, which allowed for the cast members to very effectively transport the audience member?s imagination right into the very town of Grovers Corners and into the everyday lives of its inhabitants. With the exception of one scene, during the third act where a full set and costumes were used to represent the importance of the scene, the play was largely left to the imagination of the audience. Although the entire cast, without exception, was magnificent, no better choice then Helen Hunt in the role of Stage Manager could have been made. Helen Hunt was the shining light of the production and was the glue that bonded the entire piece together. Helen Hunt and cast were so adept at making the town of Grover?s Corners come to life, that several audience members were audibly upset, by the passing of one of the town?s folk. This play is an absolute must see before its run ends on September 12th. For me personally seeing this cast, on this day, moved this play, to the top choice for my favorite play of all time. Do not hesitate, even one more day, buy your tickets now.
