WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Planning a wedding can be hell... but planning to ruin a wedding can be a hell of a lot of fun! Anthony insists on a big, traditional wedding, but his overbearing mama has a few stipulations of her own. Add to the mix bickering relatives, a crazed wedding coordinator and a jealous ex-boyfriend who wants nothing more than to ruin the whole thing, and you've got one hell of a party!

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Stereotypes abound in Anthony J. Wilkinson's My Big Gay Italian Wedding, playing at St. Luke's Theatre in a slightly revamped production from its 2003 premiere. It's a cartoonish work that proves to be only mildly diverting. Working with a set of scenarios familiar from sitcoms across the decades, the play relates the trials and tribulations of Anthony (Wilkinson, who channels Fran Drescher and her screechy nasal New Yawk accent) and Andrew (Reichen Lehmkuhl in a sweet, but wooden, turn) as they prep for the titular rite.

The first hurdle that the couple faces is the demand made by Angela (a shrill Randi Kaplan), Anthony's perpetually hyperventilating and hyperbolic mother: Father Rosal[...]

My Big Gay Italian Wedding
This play was seen in June 2010 in the St Luke?s Theater Midtown NYC: First it should be said that this ?Theater? is in the basement of a church and is not well suited for viewing a play. The seating is not stadium seating and everybody, except the back 10 rows, are all at the same height insert ?lady please remove your hat? joke here. But even if you are in the back 10 rows, these 10 rows of people are also at the same height as each other. When I saw the play the main characters were Anthony Wilkinson also the writer as Anthony, and Reichen Lehmkuhl now replaced as Andrew. Considering the playwright says he is pro-equal rights and pro-gay marriage his main characters failed to convince me that they should even be given the opportunity to be allowed to marry. The play is little more than stereotypical jokes about the Italian culture and jokes about current pop culture icons and events i.e. Lady Gaga, etc.. The only shining moment in the play occurs when Tricia Burns, playing Anthony?s sister Maria, sings the Ave Maria at the wedding. Although played up as a constant joke her shining voice and rendition of this beautiful song was the highlight of the show. In the end this play is ?all fluff and no stuff?. It could have tackled tough current topics like gay marriage in NY State, or gay marriage in the church, but instead relies on cheap laughs and even they have no substance behind them. They say that imitation is the best form of flattery but if this play is trying to be a stage version of Mambo italiano a very good movie then Mambo italiano should be insulted. In the end it?s probably a better decision to spend your money on an adult beverage of your choice than to spend your money on this.
