WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Mimi le Duck, a nouveau musical, features book and lyrics by Diana Hansen-Young, with music by Brian Feinstein. The production stars Annie Golden and Eartha Kitt.
The new musical follows Miriam, a discontented Mormon housewife from Ketchum, Idaho, who, in a moment of desperately crazy inspiration, packs her bags and moves to Paris, leaving behind her husband and her successful career as a painter of duck canvases for the QVC Network. Thus unfolds Mimi le Duck, a musical as whimsical and unique as the city of Paris, populated by romance and intrigue, gypsy pickpockets, over-the-hill torch singers, and that ever-elusive spark that gives us the guts to change our lives.

But what was charming and acceptable in a Fringe show does not necessarily fly, so to speak, when folks are paying substantial Off-Broadway ticket prices. Also, while recasting a key role for star power -- as has been done with the addition of the legendary Eartha Kitt -- may raise the show's profile, it doesn't make the material better. And better material is what's sorely needed here.
The unwieldy book by Diana Hansen-Young strives to be quirky, but the problem is that we constantly feel the strivi[...]
