WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
La Strada Company presents a return engagement of its award-winning stage production of Fellini's La Strada, winner of two HOLA Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre.
This Spanish-language adaptation of the legendary 1954 Italian film by Federico Fellini is co-directed by the award-winning director Rene Buch, artistic director of Repertorio Espanol, and Jorge Merced, artistic director of Pregones Theatre in New York City. The play is performed in Spanish with English super-titles.
In need of help for his street entertainment, Zampano offers money to a poor woman in exchange for her daughter Gelsomina, a young woman whose innocence borders on mental retardation.
Together they set out on a journey through several villages, presenting a spectacle of brute force leavened with comic interludes. In spite of Samp[ano's abuses, Gelsomina starts to develop an intense devotion towards him.
The pair eventually joins a traveling circuse, where they meet "The Fool," a clown who is attracted to Gelsomina. Although several of the colorful characters Gelsomina meets along the way ask her to join them, she will prove her loyalty to Zampano to the limits of her will.

Comedy and tragedy mix unconvincingly in Gerard Vazquez's stage adaptation of Federico Fellini's Academy Award-winning 1954 film La Strada, at TBG Theater. Co-directed by Jorge Merced and Rene Buch, the production certainly inspires a few laughs -- thanks to the work of performer Israel Ruiz -- but it ultimately fails to reach the tragic heights of its source material.
The work centers on a love triangle between three circus performers: strongman Zampanó (Luis Carlos de La Lombana), Gelsomina (Nanda Abella), the naïve young woman whom he's trying to integrate into his act, and The Fool (Ruiz), the clown who cannot abide the ways in which Zampanó brutalizes her.
