WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Contrary to the popular saying, timing isn't actually everything. There's little question that the quintessential anti-war musical Hair retains its political relevance as America finds itself once more in the midst of a divisive war. But tackling this often tricky, often joyous, and occasionally heartbreaking piece of theater four decades after its Off-Broadway debut comes complete with an obstacle course of directorial challenges. Fortunately, Diane Paulus overcomes the hurdles in her crowd-pleasing and remarkably satisfying Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theatre.

One of Hair's greatest challenges is to not make Gerome Ragni and James Rado's book play like a disconnect[...]

Hair Not There
I was pretty disappointed in this production, while the singing and music were quite good there was no character development, all very two dimensional and the staging and choreography were as flat as the uninspired set. Dont sit on the sides of this 3/4 round stage as almost all the action is played straight down center. For a celebration of the 60s this production is surprisingly short on Soul.

a tangled mess
I found this production of Hair to be competent but uninspired. This plays like a museum piece. The music is well performed and frankly sounded exactly like the Broadway cast album. the characters are cartoons, the show is a time capsule it didnt work. The staging was bland and played down center almost continuously, The Choreography was completely uninspired. Ive seen much more poignant and meaningful productions of this show in summer stock.
