WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Celebrated onnagata (female impersonator) Ganjiro Nakamura III embodies a beautiful young woman in the kabuki dance classic Fuji Musume (The Wisteria Maiden). The dance expresses the woman's determination in the face of deceit by her bethrothed. Using the pine tree as a metaphor for man and encircling wisteria as a metaphor from woman, the work also portrays the Japanese view of the intimate relationship between people and nature.
