WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Set in New York City, From My Hometown is a rags to riches tale of three young men (played by Kevin R. Free, André Garner and Rodney Hicks) just off the bus from Philadelphia, Detroit and Memphis with a song on their lips, style in their steps and big dreams in their hearts of performing at the world famous Apollo Theatre. But can they rock the audition, become friends for life and still have time to top the R&B charts?

Home to the Roundabout Theatre downtown, this 499-seat newly renovated former movie theater has a long history in the neighborhood as an art house showing film classics.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

In "New York State of Mind," Billy Joel sings about needing to get back to the City because he's been out of touch with the rhythm and the blues. Boy, would he be getting back in touch this week! For one thing, Ruth Brown, the so-called "Queen of Rhythm and Blues," is staging a comeback that has crowds hurrying to the East Side's Le Jazz Au Bar to see what greatness is. And, for another thing, the exhilarating From My Hometown has opened.
