WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Amiri Baraka's hard-hitting drama, Dutchman, returns to the place where it all started, Off-Broadway's Cherry Lane Theatre. Starring Dulé Hill (Broadway's The Tap Dance Kid and Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk, TV's The West Wing), this shocking drama tells the story of a white woman who seduces a naïve bourgeois black man on a train, with terrifying results. Dutchman is directed by Bill Duke.

Dramatist, poet and novelist Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones) first rose to national prominence in 1964, with the New York production of his Obie Award-winning play, Dutchman. Baraka established the Black Arts Repertory Theater School in Harlem, and in 1967, he published his black nationalist collection of poetry, Black Magic. Baraka also served in the United States Air Force, taught at New York's New School for Social Research (1961-64), and was a visiting professor at San Francisco State College (1966-67), Yale University, New Haven (1977-78), and George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (1978-79). In 1980, he moved to the Department of African Studies at SUNY-Stony Brook, where he taught until his retirement in 1999. He has received numerous fellowships, grants and awards.

LeRoi Jones), is currently playing at the Cherry Lane Theatre -- the same venue in which the work debuted in 1964. Though the action remains set in the 1960s, the play feels fresh and contemporary, thanks in large part to stellar production design and the vibrant performances of lead actors Dulé Hill and Jennifer Mudge.

Set in a NYC subway car, Dutchman concerns Clay (Hill), a middle-class African-American man in suit and tie. He is approached by Lula (Mudge), a seductive white woman in a black dress, who's seen symbolically biting into an apple on her first appearance. Their seemingly innoc[...]
