BAM joins the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Doug Varone and Dancers with the New
York premiere of Dense Terrain, a new work for a cast of thirteen. Known for his kinetic,
emotional works, Varone's Dense Terrain is an exploration of our impulse to pair and
communicate and reveals how words, gestures, and movement are all equally potent aspects of
language. A unique spoken language, declared in bold monologue and glimpsed in torn letters
scattered on the stage, serves as a metaphor for how we are all interconnected. Whether deliberate
or inadvertent, each tilt of the head or imperfect embrace digs beneath the surface to expose
hidden truths of who we are and how we feel. Dense Terrain features an original score by indierock
film composer Nathan Larson (Boys Don't Cry, Velvet Goldmine), performed live.
