WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
On the heels of her recent distinguished production of Julius Caesar and her eariler acclaimed King John, director Karin Coonrod rejoins Theatre for a New Audience to stage Shakespeare's Coriolanus. Set in Rome during a war, Coriolanus is not a tragedy of an individual, but rather a tragedy of Coriolanus and the people, of patricians vs. plebians, rich vs. poor, and of explosive class warfare. In this disturbing, great play, Shakespeare gives us a stark vision of a hero unable to live in his society and of a feckless people driven by self-interest. Coriolanus, Greek in its proportions and profound in its exploration of character, portrays a polarized world in which there are no common values between the heroic individual and the people. Karin Coonrod directs.
