WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A play sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, columbinus probes the psychological warfare of alienation, hostility and social pressure that goes on in high schools across America. columbinus weaves together excerpts from discussions with parents, survivors and community leaders in Littleton as well as diaries and home video footage to bring to light the dark recesses of American adolescence. The show is written by The United States Theatre Project and conceived and directed by PJ Paparelli.

On April 20, 1999, two teenage boys brought guns into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. They shot and killed 12 students and one teacher, wounded many others, then turned the guns upon themselves. The United States Theatre Project's columbinus, now at New York Theatre Workshop, is what director PJ Paparelli terms "a theatrical discussion" based upon this incident. Written by Paparelli and Stephen Karam, with dramaturgy by Patricia Hersch, this uneven work has some powerful moments but lacks the complexity necessary for a full exploration of its subject matter.
