WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Nicholas Martin directs the New York premiere of John Guare's Chaucer in Rome. The play traces the evolving relationship of three Americans living in Rome during the last year of the millennium, a holy year during which the city is teeming with Catholic pilgrims from around the world. The cast features Polly Holliday, Dick Latessa, Jon Tenney, Grant James Varjas, Lee Wilkof, and more.

Just when I was thinking that John Guare might have been an excellent scenarist for Federico Fellini, a character in the playwright's astounding Chaucer in Rome said, "Ahhh, Fellini! You didn't go far enough."
So Guare, sly fellow that he is, had intended to plant the thought in my mind. And, yes, I got it that Chaucer in Rome is Guare's go at a script Fellini could have filmed. The pleasures of a Fellini celluloid extravaganza are here in abundance--Guareian send-ups of religious and art-world fervor whipped as if they were eggs and sugar into a tangy zabaglione.
