WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Plays don't get more brutal -- for both the characters and audiences -- than Tommy Nohilly's Blood From a Stone, now being presented by The New Group at Theatre Row. Directed with an astute matter-of-factness by Scott Elliott and performed with electrifying ferocity, this unflinching portrait of familial dysfunction sets theatergoers reeling in the most satisfying of ways.

The play begins with Margaret (Ann Dowd) and her adult son Travis (Ethan Hawke) performing the most mundane of tasks: folding laundry. Stellar Performances and Well-painted Characters
Yes the play is long, and the first act is very long 1 hour 40 minutes, I believe. However, the acting and the character portraits are so real and so intense that my ADD brother-in-law was able to sit still for all of it, without a wiggle. All the performances are notable--Ethan Hawke does an incredible job, as hes on stage during almost the whole performance. Gordon Clapp Bill, Ann Dowd Margaret, Natasha Lyonne Sarah and Daphne Rubin-Vega Yvette are all fantastic. Thomas Guiry as Matt was terrific near the end of the show. A skilled actor, I believe that Guirys performance was hindered by the playwrights feelings about the character--obviously drawn from his brother.

Rather Give Blood
Id rather give blood than sit through this show again. A totally waste of talent.
