WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A city is hit by an epidemic of white blindness. The government quarantines the blind in a vacant mental hospital secured by armed guards, who are on order to "shoot to kill" anyone who tries to escape. Living in squalor and abject fear, social conventions crumble and the criminal element holds the rest captive: food rations are stolen, women are raped, people are murdered. The one eyewitness to this nightmare -- the only one who retains her sight -- guides a band of blind charges out of the hospital and into a devastated city, where this impromptu family attempts to re-build their lives out of the chaos. Blindness is based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, and adapted for the stage and directed by Joe Tantalo.
