Back to Babylon is a one-man show that tells a compelling story based on writer/performer Gregg Tome's personal experiences growing up in Babylon, Long Island. Through uncanny portrayals of nine characters, the tale of a close-knit circle of townies, friends and mentors is told. The plot unfolds as a local resident, on the eve of his ten-year high school reunion, reminisces about his friends from the past, who struggled to define themselves within a haze of youthful revelry. Each character delivers a dually humorous and poignant monologue revealing another piece of the narrative, ultimately exposing a disaster that defines and connects them. With an edgy story line, 70's rock music, and imagery from the town itself, the audience is taken on a trip down suburban memory lane and discovers the permanent connections between the characters, ancient Babylon and Babylon, Long Island, and learns the past is always present in our lives.

Greg Tome obviously put a lot of work developing this a great one man show that well captures its characters in a time and place.
Instead of a simple array of cliched characters, Tome seamlessly transforms into each role that are each unique and memorable. Of course some stood out more than others in this very funny and tender show.
You dont have to be from L.I. or NY to get it.
Hope he has a good run- definitely deserves it.

Minutes before Gregg Tomes one man Show, Back to Babylon began, I found myself, a born and bred Long Islander now living in Florida, trying to recite from memory the train stops on the Long Island Railroads Babylon line. It was a chant I had heard daily for years, like the lyrics to the train tracks music. All stops led to Babylon, and Gregg Tome leads you from one memorable resident to another, linking them together with humor and intelligence and insight. He tells stories of very different residents of a singular town, with their own individual stories, transforming seamlessly from one to another as they explain to us their struggle with change and loss, their need to move on and the constant pull of the past. As a Long Islander, I could put my own memories to the places described, but you dont have to have come from there. Greg Tome transforms his Babylon to a time and place we all have known, in some form. A must see.

Ive seen this play 3 times and its effect and the arc of the characters journey has lost none of its weight or levity. Counter to the popular paradigm of the smoky one man/one act play this piece is truly a pleasure to watch and I find myself seeing it for the first time, every time. Brilliant!

Review: RE:Back to Babylon is NOT TO BE MISSEDbytinarap
This actor, Gregg Tome, is absolutely riveting, as he morphs from character to character in this one-man show. His in-depth portrayal of 9 different characters from his past in Babylon, NY is rich, convincing and poignant. When the show is over, youre left wishing there was more, its THAT GOOD! Of course, for some of us, this show also holds some humorous "coming of age" nostalgia which makes the show even more enjoyable. Ive seen it twice and will probably travel from West Virginia to NYC to see the upcoming show at Players Theatre on MacDougal Street!
