WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Nouveau cirque wunderkind James Thiérrée makes his highly anticipated return to BAM with the soulful Au Revoir Parapluie. Marvelous physical theatrics--acrobatics, dance, mime, music--abound.

The show begins with a fantastic creature, covered in gold glitter and crooning in an unidentifiable tongue. Realizing that it can't escape its golden shroud, its face crumples in anguish. The curtain opens to reveal ominously swirling ropes on which climb changelings -- careening, flying, and dancing in pitched battle with rocking chairs and great swaths of black cloth.

With Au Revoir Parapluie (which translates as "Farewell Umbrella") Thiérrée and his astonishing company achieve a most delicate balance of pathos and delight.

This theater was renamed in honor of the recently-departed BAM founder Harvey Lichenstein. It is a 900-seat, restored and renovated movie house, operated by BAM as an additional auditorium for theater, dance, and music.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

If you didn't know that James Thiérrée is Charlie Chaplin's grandson, I wonder how long it would take you to realize it as you marvel wide-eyed and drop-jawed at his absolute must-see theatrical event, Au Revoir Parapluie, now in a limited engagement at BAM. Thiérrée -- who barely speaks during this 100-minute whizbang -- has the curly Chaplin hair, as well as his ancestor's facial planes, the supple body, the penchant for silly walks, the impulse for balletic movement, the knack for blending hilarity with pathos, and the overall genius for creativity.
