WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Araby is singer /songwriter and composer Chris Rael's first performance piece, and the composer and front man of Church of Betty - enters this artistic arena with a bang. Rael brings a fierce yet sensitive intelligence to the emerging literary based performance scene. Araby is a uniquely structured "chamber musical" re-telling of James Joyce's Dubliners. In Araby, Rael re-conjures Joyce's 15 short stories in 16 songs with original music and lyrics that draw on and accent the emotions Joyce sought to illustrate in Dubliners, but that are common to all eras and cultures.

RE:Broadway bound?
Its so exciting to see the birth of a possible new big-time modern musical in one of these so-called theater labs in New York. Most of them do such dreck, but I actually think theres a big future for Araby now playing at the new Dixon Place Theater. Who knew quirky little DP could produce something so classy? I stumbled upon it after reading the Backstage review today, and was skeptical. But I spent $15 and discovered there is life to this endangered genre. Beautiful, filling, and intimate. The musicians and singers are outstanding.
