WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
All-American Girls is a tale of racism, deceit and betrayal after the coach of an all-Negro female baseball team goes missing in 1945 Chicago. The drama captures an era in American history when women were called on to keep baseball alive as the men went off to fight in World War II. Layon Gray, the writer and director of the long-running Off-Broadway hit Black Angels Over Tuskegee, continues to expand African-American theatre with All-American Girls, his latest work.

A League of Their Own meets A Soldier's Play in writer/director Layon Gray's formulaic new drama, All American Girls, at the Actor's Temple Theatre. Set in 1945, the intermittently engaging work tells the story of an all-female, all-African-American baseball team, whose coach mysteriously disappears prior to a highly publicized exhibition match.
The parallels to the popular 1992 film about the first female professional baseball league are easy enough to see. But it's in the play's structure that the influence of Charles Fuller's 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning play becomes most evident.
