WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In its first major New York revival, Charles Fuller's Pulitzer Prize-winning A Soldier's Play takes us into the heart of a murder investigation on a Louisiana army base during World War Two. The victim is a brutal, self-hating black soldier, Sergeant Vernon Waters. The investigator sent by the Army is, for that era, a rarity: a black officer (Taye Diggs), who must square off against Waters' white commander (Stephen Pasquale). Who killed Waters finally comes to light. As for why -- the answer turns out to be as complicated as the whole history of race in America. Jo Bonney directs.

An African-American sergeant is murdered near his army base in Louisiana. Though some initially suspect the Ku Klux Klan, the facts of the case prove that the incident is not quite so black and white. Second Stage Theatre's riveting revival of Charles Fuller's A Soldier's Play features a terrific ensemble cast that does justice to this 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winner.
