WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Lincoln Center Theater presents the New York premiere of the new musical A Minister's Wife, which has been adapted by Austin Pendleton from George Bernard Shaw's Candida. Conceived and directed by Michael Halberstam, with music by Joshua Schmidt and lyrics by Jan Tranen, the show is based on the 1898 version of Shaw's play, and explores the fires burning beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary marriage.

The Revered James Morrell and his wife, Candida, are happily married -- or at least they think -- until a romantic young poet enters their life, turning their world upside-down.

The work had its world premiere last spring at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois, where Halberstam is the artistic director.

Each day, LCT offers $30 student rush tickets beginning two hours before a performance at the Box Office (subject to availability). Student rush tickets are limited to one ticket per performance and you must show a valid college/university ID to purchase a ticket. Please Note: not all performances have student rush tickets.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

A Minister's Wife, now playing in Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi Newhouse Theater, puts a musical spin on George Bernard Shaw's Candida that is so uncompromising in its execution that theatergoers cannot help but be admiring. Indeed, one imagines that Shaw himself would be pleased with the work of its creators.

The play explores a tumultuous day in the life of socialist minister Rev. James Mavor Morell (Marc Kudisch), who, along with his wife Candida (Kate Fry), copes with the infatuation that the 18-year-old poet Eugene Marchbanks (Bobby Steggert) has for this older woman.

In musicalizing the work Joshua Schmidt has written a score that concurrently mirrors the quixotic intricacies of S[...]

RE:This Sure Ain't No My Fair Lady
A Ministers Wife provides a pleasant evening?s entertainment but it sure ain?t no My Fair Lady. The book by Pendleton is satisfactory but adds nothing to Shaw?s original work. The score by Schmidt is good, more opera than musical theatre, but the lyrics by Tranen are uninspired and readily forgettable. Both the acting and singing performances are acceptable but far from outstanding and the small orchestra is more of a distraction than an enhancement. All in all, turning Candida into a musical didn?t really add to the production and I much prefer the original straight play. I have posted an expanded review of this play and of several other plays on my blog www.aseatontheaisle.blogspot.com.
