Second Stage Theatre has announced two New York premiere productions joining its 37th season lineup.

The season will open in the fall with Invisible Thread, a new musical by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews. The production will be presented in association with the American Repertory Theater and directed by A.R.T. artistic director Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland). Formerly titled Witness Uganda, the production had its world premiere at A.R.T. in February 2014. Inspired by a true story, the show follows a young New York City man named Griffin who volunteers for a project in Uganda. The new musical addresses the challenges confronted by American aid workers around the world.

In early 2016, Second Stage will present Smart People, a new play written by Lydia R. Diamond (Stick Fly) and directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun). Set between September 2007 and January 2009 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the play follows four Harvard intellectuals, each of whom wrestles with racial prejudice in his or her respective academic and social spheres. The play premiered at Boston's Huntington Theatre Company in spring 2014.

Two additional productions will be announced at a later date.
