"Outsider Art" Discussion Comes to Signature Center

Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre continues its World of the Play series with a discussion on "Exploring Outsider Art" on Saturday, May 16, at 4pm at the Pershing Square Signature Center. The conversation is presented in conjunction with Athol Fugard's The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, now running in the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre.

The discussion will explore the work of Outsider Artists like the self-taught Nukain Mabusa, whose life and work inspired Athol Fugard’s The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek.

Mabusa, a farm laborer and artist who lived in South Africa, painted bright geometrical patterns on the rocks near his small hut at Revolver Creek, Mpumalanga Province, from the 1960s to the early 1980s. The self-taught Mabusa, like other Outsider Artists, worked outside the formal boundaries of the established art world. In this World of the Play panel, Signature will explore the men and women who make Outsider Art, creating works for themselves without regard to exhibition, monetary compensation, or formal training.

The panel of experts joining the conversation, led by Brian Phillips, will include gallerist Andrew Edlin, arts journalist Edward M. Gómez, and curator Kristin Sancken. The event is free and open to the general public (no reservations required).

The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek stars Bianca Amato (LCT's Macbeth) as Elmarie, Leon Addison Brown (Signature's The Train Driver) as Nukain, Caleb McLaughlin (The Lion King) as Bokkie, and Tony Award nominee Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!) as Jonathan. Performances run through June 7.
