Michael Urie Brings a Fresh Torch Song to Second Stage in New Production Photos

Urie takes on the role of Arnold Beckoff, originated by playwright Harvey Fierstein in the play’s original 1982 production.

The Second Stage Theater revival of Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song is set for opening night October 19 at the Tony Kiser Theater. Moisés Kaufman directs the production now running through December 3.

Torch Song stars Michael Urie as Arnold Beckoff and Academy Award and Tony Award winner Mercedes Ruehl as Ma, as well as Jack DiFalco as David, Ward Horton as Ed, Roxanna Hope Radja as Laurel, and Michael Rosen as Alan.

A collection of three plays, Torch Song Trilogy opened on Broadway at the Little Theatre (now the Helen Hayes) on June 10, 1982, where it enjoyed a groundbreaking run, earning Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play (Fierstein) and running for 1,222 performances, closing on May 19, 1985. In the work, "It's 1979 in New York City and Arnold Beckoff is on a quest for love, purpose and family. He's fierce in drag and fearless in crisis, and he won't stop until he achieves the life he desires."
