Irish Repertory Theatre will present Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney's The Burial at Thebes as its first production of 2016 from January 14-March 6 at the DR2 Theatre. Directed by Irish Rep artistic leader Charlotte Moore, the production has an opening night scheduled for January 24.

The Burial at Thebes will star two-time Tony Award winner John Cullum (Casa Valentina) as Creon, King of Thebes. The production will mark the second time this season that Cullum and Moore will work together at Irish Rep, with Cullum also set to star in Charlotte Moore's staging of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales from November 24-January 3.

Based on Sophocles’ Antigone, The Burial at Thebes takes place after the War of the Seven Against Thebes when Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, learns that her brothers have killed each other. When Creon, King of Thebes, grants burial to one but not the other, Antigone defies his order.

The remainder of the cast of The Burial at Thebes will be announced shortly.

The production has scenic design by James Morgan, costume design by Linda Fisher, and lighting design by Brian Nason.
