The 2003 Helen Hayes Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in professional theater in Washington, D.C. and named after the “First Lady of the American Theater” (who was a Washington, D.C. native), were bestowed last night at the Kennedy Center.

The evening’s big winner was Sweeney Todd, presented by the Kennedy Center as part of last summer’s Sondheim Celebration. The production took home four awards, including one for its female star, Christine Baranski; Brian Stokes Mitchell did not a win a Hayes award for his performance in the title role of that show but did win one for his Don Quixote in the pre-Broadway tryout of Man of La Mancha. The Synetic Theater production of Hamlet won three awards.
