He became a legendary peacemaker and 1984 Nobel Prize winner for opposing South Africa's apartheid regime. Now, Archbishop Desmond Tutu will perform in The Culture Project's Guantánamo: Honor Bound To Defend Freedom, the Off-Broadway play that exposes the inhumane treatment of detainees in an American military base in Cuba, for one night only on Saturday, October 2 at 8pm. Reverend Tutu will play the role of Lord Justice Steyn, the British magistrate who objects to the detainment of political prisoners at Guantánamo Bay.

Allan Buchman, artistic director of The Culture Project, approached the archbishop about the show shortly before it opened in August. "He's very outspoken on this issue," Buchman told Jesse McKinley of The New York Times, "and he indicated that he wanted to draw attention to it any way he could."

Guantánamo is playing at the 45 Bleecker Street Theatre (at Lafayette Street). Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8pm, with matinees on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 3PM.
