Tony Award winner Garry Hynes will direct the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Equivocation, by Bill Cain, to begin previews at MTC’s New York City Center – Stage I on February 9, with an opening set for March 2.

The play is set in the early 1600’s and focuses on what happens when a member of King James’ court attempts to commission a play about the Gunpowder Plot, in which plans were laid to blow up Parliament, from Shakespeare.

Equivocation received its world premiere at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and was developed at the Ojai Playwrights Conference and TheatreWorks in Palo Alto. Cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

MTC’s Stage I space at City Center will also house Lynn Redgrave in her autobiographical solo show Nightingale, directed by Joseph Hardy (beginning October 15), and Polly Stenham’s acclaimed British drama That Face (beginning April 29).
