New Off-Broadway Production of The Fantasticks to Open at Snapple Theater Center

By Brian Scott Lipton • May 16, 2006 • New York

A new production of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's 1960 musical The Fantasticks will begin performances on July 28 at the Snapple Theater Center (210 West 50th Street), directed by Jones. The show will open officially on August 17. No casting has yet been announced.

Suggested by the play Les Romanesques, by Edmond Rostand, The Fantasticks tells the story of a young boy and girl who fall madly in love but soon stray from each other. The score includes such standards as "Try To Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," and "I Can See It."

The Fantasticks opened at the Sullivan Street Playhouse on May 3, 1960 and played for 17,162 performances before closing on January 23, 2002. It has been staged in over 3,000 cities in the United States alone, and there have been numerous productions in other countries. A film based on the musical was released in 2000, with Joey McIntyre and Jean Louisa Kelly in the leads.
