Carlo Albán, Eisa Davis, Jason Grote, Ken Rus Schmoll, et al. Set for The Foundry’s Spring Season

The Foundry Theatre has announced the lineup of pieces that will be presented as part of NYC… Just Like I Pictured, to run April 14 – May 22 at various venues throughout the city. The pieces have been created through company commissions that have asked participants to create works that explore the city we live in.

The series will begin with Active Ingredients, which has been created by Eisa Davis and Morely working with Third Root Community Health Center. The piece is a medicine show full of insta-yoga, curative herbs, DIY acupuncture, booty-shaking jams, and revelatory dreams; it will be offered on April 14 at Brecht Forum and on April 16 at the Center in Brooklyn.

Aya Ogawa and Jeannette Yew have worked with the non-profit Adhikaar to create Yatra Samudra Samma: Journey to the Ocean, to be offered April 30 – May 1 at the Rubin Museum of Art. The show, which blends song, dance, and technology, is an invented festival for the future in which past stories of injustice and violence unfold to their imagined resolutions.

Mira al Horizonte/Look at the Horizon will be offered on May 8 at the Queens Museum of Art. Created by New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) with artists Lisa Rothe & Carlo Albán, the show centers on a group of migrant workers who struggle in New York City. On May 14-15, a look at an unlikely Eden for the 21st century, Emergence, created by Maureen Towey and Jason Grote, with the Green Oasis Community Garden will be seen at the garden.

The final offering in NYC… Just Like I Pictured will be A Point in Time, to be offered on May 19 and May 22 at the Bronx Academy of Art and Dance. Created by United Playaz with artists Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz, the piece combines poetry, song and movement to share a group of young people’s unique perspective on the place they call home.

A preview panel discussion event will be held on Monday, April 11 at 6:30pm at the Martin E. Segal Theatre at the CUNY Graduate Center. Participants will include several of the artists involved, including Ogawa, Ruiz, Sapp, and Yew, along with Ken Rus Schmoll and Melanie Joseph. RJ Maccani will moderate.

In related news, The Foundry has also announced its plans to present FUREE on Pins & Needles, to run June 22-July 9 at The Irondale Center. Based on Harold Rome’s 1930s Broadway revue written for and performed by members of The International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union, the work will be performed by members of Families United for Racial and Economic Equality. The show will use 12 of the original numbers from the show, along with new material satirizing the world in which we live. Ken Rus Schmoll will direct the production, which will have choreography by Camille A. Brown and musical direction by Richard Harper.
