About This Show

Tintypes is a musical about the immigrant experience of America from 1890 to 1917 conceived by Mary Kyte, Mel Marvin, and Gary Pearle and with music by John Philip Sousa and George M. Cohan.

The Melting Pot Theatre Company, winner of a Special Drama Desk award last season for Cobb, and the company that brought you Woody Guthrie’s American Song, presents the first NY revival of this beloved musical. It’s been 20 years since this acclaimed show was on Broadway and nominated for three Tony Awards (including Best Musical). Tintypes is a nostalgic, but thrillingly subversive pastiche that takes us back to turn of the century America, where optimism and ingenuity ran high. The growing pains of a nation are chronicled in this grand pageant of pre-World War I America by such archetypes as Teddy Roosevelt, Anna Held, and Emma Goldman, through the exuberant words and music of the day. Songs such as “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “Grand Ole Flag” are mixed with the poignant “Motherless Child” and “Toyland” to give us a well
balanced, truthful look at this bygone, but more relevant than ever, era. With a cast of five Broadway veterans this is the perfect show for families to enjoy together.
