The Joyce Theater’s International Spring Season

The Joyce Theater, New York’s home for dance, will become the world’s home for dance this spring. The exciting 12-week season features some of the finest dance companies as well as several troupes making their Joyce debuts. Tickets go on sale January 2, 2005.
Elisa Monte Dance February 1-6, 2005 This week long program includes the world premiere of A Woman’s Way (To Nancy, with Love from Tom), commissioned by Tom Klingenstein as a gift for his wife Nancy Perlman, set to the music of the David Cheso Ensemble.

Beijing Modern Dance Company February 8-13, 2005 Making their New York debut with Rear Light, performed to the music of Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Choreographed by Li Han-Zhong and Ma Bo, Rear Light reflects a young Chinese generation struggling to reconcile its traditional culture with influences from abroad and a thirst for freedom.

Toronto Dance Theatre February 15-20, 2005 Their show, Sly Verb explores touch, perception and boundaries. It seduces with the beauty of its dancing and the force of its ideas.

Israel Contemporary Dance Company February 22-27 Screensaver explores humanity’s public and private realms in a rich and diversified stage language drawn from the world of images and computers, the field of advanced technology in video and sound, and the sould and body of the dancer.

DANCEBRAZIL March 1-6 Artistic Director Jelon Vieira fuses Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira with contemporary dance to bring the exuberant culture of Bahia, Brazil to the stage with the New York premiere of Retratos da Bahia, featuring an original score by Tote Gira.
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet March 8-13, 2005 After a season of successful performances in the U.S and abroad, the eleven electrifying dancers of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet return to The Joyce with an eclectic program featuring works by Nicolo Fonte, Twyla Tharp, Lar Lubovitch and Trey McIntyre.

Peter Boal & Company March 15-20, 2005 The program from this dynamic young company includes live piano music by Philip Glass; a haunting, seldom see 1948 Daniel Nagrin solo; and new pieces created for Wendy Whelan by Shen Wei and Ewaard Liang (NYC Ballet soloist). Closing the evening is a world premiere performed and choreographed by hip-hop master Victor Quijada of Montreal’s Rubberbandance Group with NYCB Standouts Sean Suozzi and Andrew Veyette, plus John Selya, the breakout star of Broadway’s Movin’ Out

Stephen Petronio Company March 22-27 From the provocative MiddleSexGorge to the clarion Lareigne and the seductive Prelude, these dances resonate with Petronio’s signature whiplash movement, fierce structure and sensual force. Completing the program is bud, a preview of a new work in collaboration with singer/songwriter Rufus Wainright.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre March 29-April 3, 2005 Making their NY debut, the performance includes choreographer Kevin O’Day’s Sting/ING Situations inspired by the music of Sting. Polar emotions coarse through the vignettes in Hungry Heart…’we all have one’!!, choreographed by Derek Deane to music by Bruce Springstein, while the tension between classical and contemporary ballet fuels Dwight Rhoden’s 7th Heaven.
Richmond Ballet April 5-10, 2005 In their New York debut, Richmond Ballet, unveils a collection of six original works–all New York premieres– that thrillingly fuses classical and contemporary artistry in two exciting programs.
Nrityagram Dance Ensemble April 12-17 The internationally acclaimed Nrityagram Dance Ensemble from Southern India transports viewers to enchanted worlds of magic and spirituality with the sensuous flow of Odissi, the oldest of India’s classical dance forms.
Seasons of Migration:Dance and Music from Cambodia April 20-24 Imagine that heavenly spirits have come to earth to live among humans and how they are shocked and transformed by the experience. It explores the expressive boundaries of Cambodia’s exquisite classical dance, rendering contemporary ideas timeless and the ancient utterly modern. On Tuesday, April 19 at 7PM, The Joyce Theatre Foundation will present a special benefit gala evening.
Australian Dance Theatre April 26-May 1, 2005 Embodying the tension between motion and stillness, HELD juxtaposes Garry Stewart’s ballistic choreography with images by celebrated dance photographer Lois Greenfield, captured live in an extraordiary performance.
Complexions May 3-8, 2005 Repertory will include company premieres of masterpieces by William Forsythe, Ulysses Dove and Stephen Mills; two world premieres by Artistic Director Dwight Rhoden, including a new solo for the extraordiary Desmond Richardson: and White, from the evening length Anthem.
