About This Show

The Philadelphia-based, 2005 OBIE Award-winning physical theatre company Pig Iron Theatre Company presents Poet in New York, a one-man show based on the life of gay Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.

The show presents Federico García Lorca’s 1929 visit to New York as a sexual and artistic awakening in the life of the young Spanish poet. Lorca, in flight from an unrequited love for Salvador Dalí, arrives in New York as the first skyscrapers are going up and the stock market is crashing down. Barefoot, dressed in a dark suit and a bow tie, and carrying a bucket of water that he uses to slick back his hair, Lorca navigates a city of glowing watertowers and skyscraper-sized doors. Pig Iron founder Dito van Reigersberg plays 11 characters, from a volcanic Salvador Dalí to Harlem blues-singer Victoria Spivey to the ghost of Walt Whitman, in a unique evening of dance-theater that has become one of Pig Iron’s signature works.

The performance on December 11 @ 2:00 p.m. is presented in Spanish. All other performances are in English.
