About This Show

Broadway veteran Beth Fowler joins Rebecca Luker and Simon Jones in The York Theatre Company’s final “Musical in Mufti” presentation of the season, Darling of the Day, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by E. Y. (Yip) Harburg, book by Nunnally Johnson, in a revised version by Erik Haagensen. Michael Montel directs, with musical direction by Andrew Gerle.

Darling of the Day opened on Broadway in 1968 at the George Abbott Theatre and ran for 32 performances. Based on Arnold Bennett’s novel Buried Alive, the show tells the story of Priam Farll, a world famous painter who sees an opportunity to duck out of London’s stifling high society by assuming the identity of his recently deceased butler. The original cast starred Patricia Routledge (who won a Tony for her performance) and Vincent Price. York presented the first revival of Darling of the Day in the Mufti Series in 1998, using a revised version by Erik Haagensen, and this season, it is repeated in honor of the Jule Styne Centennial.
