WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
When Mass Appeal was originally presented at Manhattan Theatre Club in May of 1980, critics heralded the production. Soon afterwards, the show moved to Broadway for a run at The Booth Theatre (Opening Night: November 12, 1981).
Written by Bill C. Davis, Mass Appeal examines a clash of ideologies and personalities between an older, entrenched priest, Fr. Farley, who accommodates to survive, and a young scorching seminarian, Mark Dolson, who attacks to force salvation. In his own way, each uses his relationship with the congregation to resolve personal scars. And as both of the men try to force the other to be a good priest, they learn, in unexpected ways, the nature of courage, friendship and the infinite varieties of love.
