WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Charming audiences since its NBC television premiere in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors is the classic one-act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti centering on the visit of three wealthy and wise kings to an impoverished young boy and his mother. Having traveled far, following a bright star in the sky that is to lead them to a newborn king foretold by prophecy, Kaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar find temporary rest in the home of the poor, crippled boy Amahl and his mother. After learning of their quest, and the purpose of their luxurious gifts to the king, Amahl's mother makes a decision that brings about an unexpected miracle for the young Amahl. Mystery and second chances unfold in this inventive, heartwarming story coupled with the soaring melodies of Menotti's score. Running time: 50 minutes. This performance of the holiday classic will be followed by a sweet and savory feast of treats from Jersey City-area restaurants in the Barrow Mansion dining room, with live music and family arts & crafts activities.
