WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Alice Coltrane is a pianist and organist, a harpist, a composer and, above all, a trailblazing conceptualist. In 1966, she stepped in for the departing McCoy Tyner in John Coltrane's legendary quartet -- and later played with Tyner on his classic 1970 recording, Extensions. Since then, Alice Coltrane has steered her own course. In both her work and her life, music and spirituality have become one. Inspired by Eastern cultures, she was the first to play the harp on jazz recordings, the first to introduce the Indian sitar, and incorporate tamboura and tablas. In this rare concert appearance, she will perform with her son, tenor saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane.
