NJPAC and Two River Theater Join Forces for an All-African-American Concert Adaptation of The Music Man

Newark's New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and Red Bank's Two River Theater have teamed up to copresent Meredtih Wilson's The Music Man in concert this March, with mountings at both New Jersey venues. The production will open at Two River Theater, offering six performances from March 13-16, followed by four performances at NJPAC's Victoria Theater from March 21-23.

Directed by NAACP and Obie Award winner Robert O'Hara (In the Continuum), the production, which will feature an all-black cast, was inspired by historical accounts of the American communities that were established by former slaves during the Great Migration following the Civil War.

Isaiah Johnson (Peter and the Starcatcher) leads the charge as con man Harold Hill, who charms the town of River City, Iowa, into funding a marching band. Stephanie Umoh (Ragtime) will join Johnson onstage as his love interest, librarian Marian Paroo. The company will include 12 actors, some of whom will double as musicians in the six-piece band onstage. Kenny J. Seymour will serve as musical director.
