Jeree (Palmer) Wade and Adam Wade’s On Kentucky Avenue Musical to Receive Staged Reading

On Kentucky Avenue, a new musical about Atlantic City’s now-defunct Club Harlem, will receive a staged reading Saturday, February 18 at the Westminster Performing Arts Center in Bloomfield, New Jersey as part of the Center’s Black History Month activities.

Created by Jeree (Palmer) Wade and written by Adam Wade, the musical is a dramatic and mostly fictional look at the people and performers who took the stage at Club Harlem, located in the north section of Atlantic City from the 1930’s to the late 1980’s. The production features “special material” by Jeree Wade and Ty Stephens, with music by Frank Owens, Ty Stephens, Wilbur Bascome, Branice McKenzie, and Adam Wade.

According to press notes, the piece is based on Adam and Jeree Wade’s experiences as performers at the club 30 years apart. The story focuses on fictional club owner Larry Steel’s liasions with beautiful showgirls and dealings with mobsters as he “tries to find investors who will provide the funds he believes are necessary to help Club Harlem maintain its relevance.”

The producers and creators hope to develop this project for the Broadway stage.
