On June 3, 1683, Mr. Sadler opened a pleasure garden at a country spring (Sadler's Wells). With the addition of a wooden stage, what is now the Sadler's Wells Theatre was created. Throughout the years, the space has undergone numerous name changes and uses. Sadler's Wells was the original home of the Royal Ballet. It was closed from June 23, 1996 to October 1998 for a £48 million refurbishment. There is a seating capacity of 1500.
