Foster, LaChiusa, de Haas, et al. to Perform in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook Series
Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series continues its sixth season this spring with a lineup of performers including Sutton Foster, Michael John LaChiusa, Peter Cincotti, and Darius de Haas. Friday, January 23 at 8pm and 11pm: Darius de Haas in “Wonder: The Songs of Stevie Wonder”
Singer-actor Darius de Haas wowed Lincoln Center audiences last season with his tribute to Billy Strayhorn; he returns with the premiere of “Wonder,” in which he shares the music of Stevie Wonder that has touched him personally and inspired him artistically. The program features both classic and lesser-known songs including “As,” “All Is Fair In Love,” and “Summer Soft.” Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Saturday, January 24 at 8pm: Phil Roy
Having penned songs for Ray Charles, Aaron Neville, Joe Cocker, and Pops Staples, Philadelphia singer/songwriter Phil Roy takes center stage with songs from his critically acclaimed solo album Issues + Options. Roy’s music at once evokes Tom Waits, Bill Withers, and Van Morrison. His song “Melt,” co-written with friend and fan Nicolas Cage, was named 2002 “Song of the Year” by WFUV-FM. Stanley H. Monday and Tuesday, February 2 and 3 at 8pm: Peter Cincotti
Hailed as a “Boy Wonder [and] jazz wunderkind” by Vanity Fair, 20-year-old jazz sensation Peter Cincotti has taken the music world by storm. His 2003 self-titled debut album on Concord Records has been a Top 10 mainstay on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Charts. In recent months, in addition to maintaining a rigorous touring schedule and keeping up with his studies as a Columbia University undergrad, Cincotti has been in Germany filming Beyond the Sea, the highly anticipated Bobby Darrin biography, with Kevin Spacey. In January 2004, he will start work on his follow up album. He will make his American Songbook debut in Alice Tully Hall, the largest venue he has yet headlined. Tickets: $40 and $55.

In addition to winning the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Astaire Award for her Broadway bow in the title role of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Sutton Foster captured the hearts of audiences and critics. Saturday, May 15 at 8pm: Robert Kapilow and Judy Blazer in “What Makes It Great?”
As a follow-up to his sold-out American Songbook appearances last year, composer-musician-music historian Robert Kapilow returns for another evening of “What Makes It Great?” Joined by chanteuse Judy Blazer, he will explore the elements that make some of our favorite standards so durable. Sunday, May 16 at 8pm and 10pm: Michael John LaChiusa: “The Girly Show”
This program highlights songs that composer-lyricist LaChiusa has written for women in such shows as The Wild Party, Marie Christine, and Hello Again.
