San Francisco Kids Spotlight: August '06
The man behind the curtain isn't the only one pulling the strings in this puppet version of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. In Fairyland's latest show, Dorothy and her friends are operated by expert puppeteers as the characters battle the evil witch, confront the old man, and learn the value of home. It also contains music from the original 1939 movie.
Philadelphia Kids Spotlight: August '06
Philadelphia Children's Theatre presents a Pinocchio Commedia, with all of the figures of the beloved Italian art form -- an "Arlecchino" Cricket, a "Pantalone" Geppetto, a "Razullo" Fox, a "Beltrama" Cat, and a "Pulcinella" Puppetmaster. (Pinocchio plays himself.) It's fun for adults, children, and all theater enthusiasts. Meanwhile, Jungle Book is still playing at the Hedgerow Theatre.
London Kids Spotlight: August '06
L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has seen several adaptations -- from the original musical to The Wiz to Wicked -- but it's never been adapted like this. The Unicorn Theatre presents Patrick Shanahan's Oz, which takes the audience to a quiet Victorian office in Chicago where Baum is working on his masterpiece. When he finds a girl named Dot hiding in his house, he takes her on a journey to his soon-to-be-famous magical land. Also, check out Babe, The Sheep-Pig at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park.

Los Angeles Kids Spotlight: August 2006

Two promising family offerings on tap are Tina Howe's adaptation of the Norwegian folk tale, East of the Sun and West of the Moon (South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, August 12-20), and International City Theatre's production of writer-director Diana Doyle's Pollution Solution! (various Long Beach parks, through August 17). This musical romp, presented for free, is said to entertain children while educating them on the importance of ecology.
D.C. Metro Kids Spotlight: August '06
The Musical Theatre Center -- comprised of children between 3rd and 12th grade -- present a rare revival of Broadway's Meet Me in St. Louis. Set on the eve of the 1904 World's Fair, the musical was originally a 1944 movie starring Judy Garland, and it was adapted for the stage almost 50 years later. Also, Dinosaur Desperados take over Glen Echo Park in Puppet Co. Playhouse's upcoming production.

International troupe Pia Fraus takes part in the Goodman's Latino Theatre Festival with Bichos do Brasil (August 18-20), a unique theatrical piece that creates an enchanted forest out of 50 singing and dancing puppets. The company is famous for bringing Brazilian myths around the world.
