The Old Globe of San Diego has announced the performers who will appear in an upcoming New York workshop of the new musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the 1988 film of the same name.

The success of the December workshop will determine the feasibility of a full production of the show at the Old Globe during the 2004-2005 season, with the possibility of a Broadway run to follow. The story of the film focuses on two con men, Lawrence Jamieson (played by Michael Caine) and Freddie Benson (played by Steve Martin), who make their living off of rich women. The pair eventually find themselves in Beaumont sur Mer, locked in a competition over one woman’s $50,000, and they agree that the loser must leave town forever.

The stage adaptation has music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane. The workshop will be directed by Jack O’Brien and will star Brian Stokes Mitchell as Lawrence Jamieson and Norbert Leo Butz as Freddie Benson. Sherie René Scott, Christine Ebersole, and Denis O’Hare will co-star.
